Marble tables, plinths and boards — each piece handcrafted from natural stone and never recreated. Custom commissions welcome. Ships throughout New Zealand.
James Hopwood is an Auckland-based stonemason and founder of Prime Piece, a sculptural stone furniture brand creating one-of-one plinths and tables handcrafted in New Zealand.
Working with carefully selected natural stones sourced from Italy, Spain and beyond, each piece is designed to celebrate the movement, texture and permanence of the material.
Drawing from years of hands-on experience in stone fabrication, his work explores the intersection of sculpture, furniture and interior presence.

Marble is prized for its veining and warmth — it can etch with acidic liquids over time but remains the most visually distinctive choice. Granite is harder and more resistant to staining. Quartzite looks similar to marble but is significantly harder and more durable in daily use. For lounge and coffee tables with regular use, quartzite and granite are more forgiving; for sheer visual impact, marble is hard to beat.
Use a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner — avoid acidic products such as vinegar or citrus-based sprays. Seal marble annually with a quality stone sealer and wipe spills promptly, especially red wine, coffee and citrus juice. Granite and quartzite are more forgiving but the same principles apply. We include care instructions with every piece.
