Marble side tables in NZ: how to choose one that fits

A side table is the easiest way to bring real stone into a room. It's small enough to fit almost anywhere and costs a fraction of a full coffee table, but it still carries the weight and character of a natural slab. Here's how to pick the right one for a New Zealand home.
Why a stone side table
Side tables get knocked, leaned on and used every day. A light timber or glass table tends to look like an afterthought next to a good sofa. Stone doesn't. It has enough visual weight to hold its own beside a large armchair, and because every slab is different, it becomes the one piece in the room nobody else has.
It's also practical. A stone top is heavy enough that it won't tip when you put a cup down on the edge, and a sealed surface wipes clean in seconds.
Getting the height right
This is the one measurement that matters most. A side table should sit within about 50mm of the arm of the sofa or chair it's next to, so you can put a glass down without reaching up or down.
- Sofa arms around 550–600mm: a 450–500mm table sits just below the arm, which is the most comfortable height for most people.
- Higher arms or a reading chair: go for 500–550mm.
- Beside a bed: match the top of the mattress, usually 550–600mm.
Round, square or a pair
A round top is the most forgiving choice. It's easy to walk past, softens a room full of straight sofa lines, and suits tight spots like the gap between a sofa and a wall. A 450mm round top is big enough for a lamp and a drink without crowding the walkway.
A square top suits more structured rooms and gives a bit more surface. Pairs work well either side of a sofa or bed, and they read as deliberate rather than matching furniture bought in a set.
Choosing the stone
Green marble & onyx
Calacatta with green veining, Verde Imperiale and green onyx bring colour without needing a cushion or rug to do it. Strongest next to warm timber, linen and plants.
Best with: timber floors · olive or cream linen · brass
Black marble
Laurent Black with white and gold veining is the dramatic option. Against a pale sofa it becomes a feature; in a darker room it quietly blends in.
Best with: white or grey upholstery · black fittings
White & neutral marble
Carrara and warm neutral marbles suit almost any palette. Pick one if you want the stone to sit back and let the rest of the room lead.
Best with: any palette · bright, airy rooms
Mystique green
Cool jade and teal tones with gold veining that shifts with the light. Works beautifully as a pair either side of a sofa.
Best with: navy, sage or charcoal sofas · black steel

Caring for a marble side table
Every Prime Piece top is finished with two coats of nano-top sealer before it leaves the workshop. Day to day:
- Wipe spills promptly with warm soapy water
- Avoid vinegar, citrus cleaners and anything acidic, which can dull marble over time
- Use a coaster under hot mugs and wet glasses

Frequently asked questions
How much does a marble side table cost in NZ?
Prime Piece marble side tables start at $490 for a 450mm round top on a black steel frame. Larger solid stone side and bedside tables run from $950 to $1,499.
What height should a side table be?
Within about 50mm of your sofa or chair arm. For most sofas, that means a table between 450mm and 550mm high.
Can a marble side table go outside?
Marble is best kept indoors or under cover, as long exposure to rain and UV can affect the finish. Granite and quartzite handle covered outdoor use better. Ask about a custom piece if you need one for a deck or terrace.
